What is a credit check for employment?

Employment Credit Checks are a common background check used by employers to determine risk of applicants and employees. These checks can also be referred to as a Financial Probity Report and Adverse Financial Report.

These checks review financial history and identify information from the past six years, including; current and previous addresses, electoral roll data, bankruptcies, Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs), sequestrations and trust deeds (insolvency data), and County Court Judgments (CCJs).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If a credit check shows that an applicant’s ability to perform in a job could be impacted by their financial situation, an employer is within their rights not to employ the applicant.

Only the applicant will be able to see a credit check on their credit report. It won’t be visible to anyone else, so it won’t affect their credit score.

Our employment credit check screening process includes an evaluation of a candidate’s credit history, including credit score, outstanding debts, payment history, and any recent financial issues. It helps assess financial responsibility and reliability, providing insights into the candidate’s financial stability and potential risk.

In the UK, employers can consider credit history in hiring decisions, particularly for roles involving financial responsibilities. However, they must ensure that the decision is fair and relevant to the job role. The employer must also comply with data protection laws and inform the candidate if credit history impacts their application.

Financially regulated employees in the UK are required to undergo credit checks prior to employment to ensure financial responsibility and compliance. For other roles, credit checks are not legally required but may be used based on job relevance.
