What is the DBS Update Service?

The DBS Update Service enables applicants to keep their DBS certificates up to date and employers to check the status of DBS certificates for their organisation. The service is for Standard and Enhanced DBS checks only.

Registering for the DBS Update Service

Applicants and employees can subscribe to the DBS Update Service when they receive their certificate after a check has been completed. This will keep DBS Checks updated for future employment and subscription will last for one year.

Renewing your subscription to the service:

  • Can be renewed by choosing automatic renewal during registration or up to 30 days before the current subscription ends
  • Can’t be renewed on the last day of subscription. In that case, you need to apply for a new DBS Check and register to the DBS Update Service again.

Our DBS status check service

For a low-cost one-off fee, our DBS Status Check will monitor DBS Update Service results for employers and provide ongoing support. You will set a time period for automated reminders and we’ll notify you to any changes in criminal history or if any subscriptions to the service lapse.

These alerts can prompt you to run a further DBS Check and make more informed decisions. We will support you to make sure your organisation stays compliant with the relevant legislation and it can be useful for audit purposes, too.

As an employer, you’re legally responsible for making sure the job role is eligible for a Standard DBS Check or Enhanced DBS Check. You can do this by selecting the relevant workforce during your application. You must have permission from the applicant or employee.
